Fiji

Lonely Planet Solomon Islands, David Harcombe, Lonely Planet
-
A Travel Survival Guide to the Solomon Islands. NEW EDITION! Amazon finally
has the 1997 edition in stock! This is about the best help for planning a trip
and traveling in the Solomons. This book costs about $40 US if
you wait to buy it in the Solomons.
Indonesia
-
Underwater Indonesia, Kal Muller, Periplus Editions
-
The best guide to diving all under Indonesia and SeaHorseTales most requested
book. As Kal says, it is both the
best and the worst guide as it is the ONLY guide. Kal personally dives
all the areas described in the book and knows more about Indonesia than most
Indonesians. I was privileged to borrow the copy he marked with updates as he
researched the diving north of Sulawesi in 1995. Even the Indonesian dive
operators sometimes use this book as a guide. Be sure to buy the latest edition ('95) with the Coleman's shrimp on the cover.
This book has been unavailable through amazon.com for some time, so make your request
via email to Woody Mayhew, wmayhewphoto@topher.net, who has generously offered to
stock and ship this book.

Sulawesi : Islands Crossroads of Indonesia, Kal Muller, Periplus Editions
-
Sulawesi is a gigantic island. This guide covers everything from shopping to
diving, hiking, customs, transportation and culture, etc. Good maps.
-

Good Bali Guide. Lombok too.
Indo-Pacific
-
Indo-Pacific Coral Reef Field Guide, Dr. Gerald Allen & Roger Steene, Tropical Reef Research
-
A great field guide, good to carry on a trip if you can only take one
book. Hundreds of color photos with scientific names for everything from
corals to fish and sea shells.
-
Coral Reef Animals of the Indo-Pacific, Gosliner, Behrens & Williams
-
Relatively new guide to "Animal Life from Africa to Hawai'i exclusive of the
vertebrates" (no fish). Brief, but very good ID photos and descriptions of
the critters including the distribution and habitat. The only item missing is
the size of the creature.
Caribbean, Florida
-
Reef Coral Identification, Florida-Caribbean-Bahamas, Paul Humann, New World Publications
-
Handy spirl bound ID books with habitat, behavior, photos and descriptions
of different phases, even the likely reaction to a diver (which is minimal
for a coral).
-
Reef Creature Identification, Florida-Caribbean-Bahamas, Paul Humann, New World Publications
-
Handy spirl bound ID books with habitat, behavior, photos and descriptions
of different phases, even the likely reaction to a diver. Lots of photos
and a good index.
-
Reef Fish Identification, Florida-Caribbean-Bahamas, Paul Humann, New World Publications
-
Handy spirl bound ID books with habitat, behavior, photos and descriptions
of different phases, even the likely reaction to a diver.
Underwater Photography
-
The Manual of Underwater Photography, Heinz-Gert de Couet & Andrew Green
-
For serious underwater photographers this book provides a wealth of information
about photographing underwater. The equipment sections are outdated, but the
explanations and diagrams of light-under-water theory are worth reading for any
photographer who wants to understand the basics of underwater photography.
General Marine Life
-
Watching Fishes : Life and Behavior on Coral Reefs, Roberta Wilson, James Q. Wilson, Harpercollins
-
A must for would-be underwater photographers. Descriptions of marine
behavior. Easy reading, but not much in the way of photos. If you see
something happening underwater that you don't understand, this book will
probably explain it. amazon.com claims to have deleted it from their catalog.
Information on where to buy this book will be updated in the near future.
-
Coral Seas, Roger Steene
-
Roger's beautiful new book of photography! Weird and wonderful creatures from
the world's reefs. An amazing collection of behavior shots. Truly amazing what
can be shot with a Subal boat anchor (you had to be there). Roger dived St.
Vincent with us in Aug. '98. Get the "tough guy's" book and the
sequel, which is sure to have plenty of St. Vincent's seahorses in it!
